How to Host your own DIY Painting Party on a budget!
My daughter was turning 12 and wanted to host her own
'DIY Birthday Paint Party' and wanted me to host it! Ackkkk
I am a jewelry designer not a painter...how the heck am I going to do this!
So I rolled up my sleeves and watched every bloody You Tube video on DIY acrylic painting, bought out the dollar store canvases and went to work!
and you know what? It was one of the easiest most fun Birthday Parties she has ever had! When I posted some pic's on FB I had people asking me if I could host one for their kids birthday! It's really is so easy that anyone can do it, even if you don't really know how to paint. Honestly the kids didn't really care what they painted...some didn't even follow the instructions...they JUST WANTED TO PAINT!!
So I thought I would do a blog post on it with some instructions on how you too can be the curator of a DIY painting party! ;)
First thing you need to do is choose your picture. Most DIY paintings are just layering, paint your background first and layer. There are some good tutorials on Youtube
Once you choose your picture, do a practice one so you can instruct your guests on how to paint it (this is key)
You can use easels, my hubby built ours, and you can too https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-TJC1Z4CbY or pick some up at your local arts and crafts store
1. Open a bottle of wine
2. Drink 1 or 2 glasses
Once that task is completed, you can start setting up the room ;)
3. To set up your room, here's what you will need: (most everything will can be bought at the Dollar Store)
a) Large Canvases from the Dollar Store $4 (CDN) each
b) Acrylic Paint ($1 (CDN) / bottle
c) paint blushes (you can get a whole pack for $2) they will use several sizes
d) paper towel
e) cups for water
f) paper plates to use as a palette
We found that each Costco folding table would fit 6 canvases. We had 12 guests so we had 2 full tables.
We had music going, decorations the kids were having a blast!
We took a 1/2 break after we painted the background so it could dry. This would be a good time for snacks and drinks!
I painted along with them showing them step by step, but as I mentioned it was all about having fun. I made it very clear in the beginning that there is no right and no wrong when it comes to art, paint exactly how you want, make it original or follow along....the key is to HAVE FUN! and Fun they did!! They all cheered each other on and complimented each other on a job well done!
Then they all went home with their original art work as their goodie bag!
Total paint supply cost for 12 guests (not including the easels) : $85.00 (Canadian)
Watching 12 budding Artists create their Masterpieces? Priceless
